Picture of the Day: New Year’s Eve over Sky Harbor

By General Aviation News Staff · January 2, 2023 ·

Stu Tracy submitted this photo and note: “Transitioning through Class B over Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (KPHX) in Arizona at 5,500 feet on a New Year’s Eve breakfast flight from Marana Regional Airport (KAVQ) to Phoenix Deer Valley Airport (KDVT). The plane is a 1973 Cessna Cardinal 177B we have owned for 34 years. Great way to end the old year.”

By NASA · December 30, 2022 ·

I’m very disappointed in how the Tower was not helpful in my situation. Even on a normal day, that controller seems overwhelmed and stressed out, spacing airplanes on 5+ mile finals, yelling at planes to widen the base leg to abnormal sizes, then when I experienced my problem, gives me instructions contrary to what I felt was the safest course of action and unhelpful overall.

What are the advantages to a high compression conversion of my aircraft’s engine?

By Paul McBride · December 29, 2022 ·

Reader Jeffrey A. Hughes asks our engines expert: What is the advantage to doing a high compression conversion to a Lycoming O-320 (from 150 hp to 160 hp)?
