Mauricio Castro submitted this photo and note: “My wife and I visited with family in Cape Cod for a nice vacation and flying cross country. We are based at KTTA in Sanford N.C., the home of Wings of Carolina Flying Club. It was an excellent learning experience, and along the way we met some awesome people who welcome us in their FBOs. Pilots came out to greet us and chatted about where we were coming from and where we were going. The C-172 that we flew is forever in our hearts. One of my great memories of this adventure was to know that a handful of pilots, mechanics, and instructors were checking on our progress and well-being on FlightAware. Many gave us pointers on how to prep for this trip as it was my first long cross-country in very busy airspace. As of now, my wife and I are already planning the next flying adventure. Until then….”

Number of fatal accidents in homebuilts ticks up

For the federal fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2022, the FAA reported there were 56 fatal accidents in experimental category aircraft over the preceding 12 months, including 39 in amateur-built aircraft. That compares to 42 total accidents — 33 in amateur-built aircraft — during the 12-month period between October 2020 and September 2021.
