KSGJ returns to its roots with name change

By General Aviation News Staff · January 29, 2025 · 5 Comments

The Northeast Florida Regional Airport (KSGJ) plans to change its name back to St. Augustine Airport, a move designed to eliminate confusion and better align with the city’s historic and cultural appeal, according to airport officials.

The name change marks a return to the simpler name the airport bore 15 years ago, before it was changed in 2010 to reflect a broader regional identity, officials with the St. Johns County Airport Authority noted.

“Renaming the airport to St. Augustine Airport directly connects us to the city’s historic charm and high-end appeal,” said Interim Executive Director Courtney Pittman. “St. Augustine is an internationally recognized destination, and aligning the airport with this brand enhances its attractiveness to private and corporate travelers. A name tied to St. Augustine signals exclusivity, cultural significance, and convenience — qualities that resonate with the discerning clientele we aim to serve.”

Pittman also noted that the name change is a forward-looking decision.

“This is not just about renaming the airport — it’s about setting the stage for future growth and flexibility in a rapidly evolving aviation market. We want this airport to be a lasting reflection of St. Augustine’s exceptional reputation.”

The name change request was reviewed and unanimously approved by the St. Johns County legislative delegation, marking the first step in securing approval from the Florida Legislature, airport officials reported.

During WWII the Fairchild company had an Engine overhaul facility for Navy planes.
My Uncle James Hollingsworth was station there through the war. He was an excellent mechanic and started the Hollingsworth H-D motorcycle business
He built a Sprint and a Sportster for racing. His boys won at Daytona on those bikes.

Thank You !, Thank You!. Thank You ! I hope other “renamed” airports will follow suit. Many of the recently renamed airports seem to be taking on a “marketing” flare along with the accompanying term “regional” rather than the original common sense name that is easy to identify with without looking at a map/sectional to figure out what the “renaming” has done. Only change for the better – for the USERS of the facility – like the PILOTS !! not the city fathers or politicians tyring to attract attention with a fancy neame !!

FINALLY! I have been flying in and out of St. Augustine for over 10yrs and everybody called it St. Augustine. The old name was a joke, especially among pilots here.
