A new license plate that supports general aviation is now available for pre-sale voucher orders in Florida.
The new Support General Aviation B8R specialty license plate features general aviation aircraft in flight at an airport near a beach.
Proceeds from the sales of the general aviation plate will go to the Aerospace Center For Excellence (ACE) on the grounds of the SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo in Lakeland, Florida, which provides scholarships to Floridians interested in pursuing careers in aviation.
According to officials, once 3,000 pre-sale vouchers are sold, the Florida Department of Highway Safety will begin making the actual specialty plates.
You can buy a pre-sale voucher by making an appointment at your County Tax Collector’s DMV Office. Some counties do allow purchases online, including Bay, Duval, Escambia, Hillsborough, Lee, Monroe, and Orange, according to officials.

I’ve been wanting an aviation themed license plate. I don’t care for the design of this plate.
I think I will wait and see if another design comes out later.
I’d be happy to get an aviation plate for my Florida car, but the sample shown is a no go for me. It tries to get too much in the picture, high wing, low wing, rotary, beach, sun, palm trees, and, oddly, an FAA tower….like a 1950’s text book illustration. Need a tasteful plate that actually looks good on the car as well as promoting the GA “brand”.
This isn’t a bad idea,.but it’s not a good one, either.
About 18 months ago, a Florida specialty plate, “Learn to Fly,” was introduced for pre-sale. There are 185 of those pre-ordered. And now we have the General Aviation plates, of which 130 have been pre-ordered.
In Florida, pre-sales must reach 3,000 within 24 months.
From this, what I’m hoping people have now figured out is that it is HIGHLY likely that the target audience for each of these pre-orders is the SAME group, which means we are fighting ourselves and as such, and neither plate will meet the 3,000 requirement.
A little bit of research and conversation within the Florida aviation community would have helped us actually get an aviation plate. Unfortunately, at this rate, it does not appear likely.
