Michigan’s Two Hearted Airstrip reopens
The airfield was closed in October 2021 for rehabilitation and maintenance by volunteers with the Recreational Aviation Foundation. Efforts included re-grading, new topsoil, tilling, seeding, mulching, and compacting 800 feet of the airfield.

Bill Steinmetz submitted this photo and note: “My 172 at Pioneer Field for lunch and a tour sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association and Recreational Aviation Foundation on May 15, 2022. I am the Indiana State Liaison for the Recreational Aviation Foundation. We just concluded our biennial conference at Waukesha, Wisconsin, which included a fly-out to Pioneer Field to meet with Jack Pelton, CEO of the EAA, have lunch, and tour their new education and conference center. There were 22 aircraft in all. It was a great thrill to land at Pioneer Field!”
Collaboration saves 45S
After years of neglect, volunteers from the Recreational Aviation Foundation and the Oregon Pilots Association volunteered to handle maintenance at the Silver Creek Airstrip, saving it from closure.
Backcountry Maine airfield reopens
A new agreement makes the Recreational Aviation Foundation responsible for the recreational use of the Red Pine airfield, which is in the St. John River Forest in the backcountry of Maine.
