While the 2022 Reno Air Races ended tragically with a fatal crash during the Jet Gold Race on Sunday, Sept. 18, there was plenty of action at Reno Stead Airport (KRTS) during the preceding week. Photographer Bradley Orr was on site to capture some of that action.

Hood River Fly-In: Come for the planes, stay for the people
On the smoky weekend of Sept. 10-11, 2022, about 200 fliers and their planes dropped in on WAAAM for the museum’s annual fly-in. If the varied hardware sounds interesting, linger to talk with the pilots and others who traveled here. This fly-in is a relaxed social event where you’re likely to hear tips on flying, restoring aircraft, and maintenance.

Business aviation steps up to assist Ian victims
As final preparations are being made for the start of the National Business Aviation Association’s annual Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) Oct. 18, 2022, the association has created a dedicated website featuring its humanitarian response program and other resources, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian’s Florida landfall in late September.

World War II veteran takes to the air in SBD Dive Bomber 80 years later
World War II veteran Dick Miralles slid into the gunner’s seat of the SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber almost as easily as he did 80 years ago in the South Pacific. Miralles, 98, was reliving his wartime experience in a restored SBD operated by CAF Airbase Georgia in Peachtree City, Georgia. According to Miralles, the flight “was calm compared to what I was used to.”
TBM owners gather in Nashville
The TBM Owners and Pilots Association (TBMOPA) met in late September in Nashville for the association’s 2022 convention, attracting owners of all versions of the TBM.

The annual fly-in includes lots of good food, including Texas BBQ, a Hangar Party, a flour bombing contest, and a Stearman fly-over of a local football game.
