New hangar complex coming to San Carlos Airport

By Ben Sclair · June 14, 2021 ·

San Carlos Airport (KSQL) will soon have a new hangar complex that will include office space for lease and country club style amenities.

Skyway Center, adjacent to the Hiller Aviation Museum, is currently under construction. The plan is to deliver a premier aviation lifestyle, not just T-hangars, according to developers.

The complex is C-shaped with hangars on the north and south sides with office and meeting space, as well as space for social gatherings connecting the two wings of hangars.

Hangars — all named for female aviators — come in three types: Private, semi-private, and community.

Just three private hangars — named Jeana, Evelyn, and Desiree — are available. All face the runway and offer views of the entire runway, electric bifold doors, white epoxy floors, and private restroom facilities.

Three semi-private hangars — named Frances, Gina, and Harriet — are just under 5,000 square feet with 72-foot door width and 19-feet of height clearance. These hangars are for owners with more than one aircraft or for groups of people who would like to get together to share a hangar, according to the developers.

The community hangars — named Amelia, Bessie, and Christa — also have 72-foot-wide and 19-foot-tall clear spans and are just over 8,600 square feet. If demand requires it, each hangar is designed to be split in half by an internal wall for added flexibility, officials noted.

The office complex includes a staffed reception desk, office space for lease, meeting space, and an aviator’s lounge named The Carlos Club, which may have meaning for local residents. The lounge will be for the exclusive use of the aviation tenants and will include a full bar and host monthly aviation and social events, the developers said.

Skyway Center is located on property not owned by San Mateo County. In order to maintain access to the airport, developers agreed to not lease space to Part 135 operators, Part 145 mainteners, nor operate an FBO or pump fuel.

Staff will provide for concierge style service for tenants by moving aircraft into and out of hangars upon request and valet park cars, if a tenant so choses.

The hangars are named for female aviators “to honor Zelda Levin as the matriarch of the family that owned the property, and until she recently passed, who was the oldest living resident of San Mateo County,” said Douglas Wilson of FBO Partners, leasing agent for Skyway Center. The property that Skyway Center will sit upon is now part of the Levin Trust.

“We are also sponsoring a $5,000 annual scholarship to Women in Aviation, which will be the Skyway Center Aviatrix Scholarship.”

Rent will be higher than offerings at KSQL and other Bay-area airports — if you can get a hangar.

“San Carlos Airport has a multi-year waiting list for hangar rentals,” notes the San Carlos Airport Association website.

As an example, a Community Hangar slot tenant will pay north of $2,000 a month.
