Installation of the first of 13 weather cameras at each of Colorado’s mountain Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) sites was completed by the FAA on July 14, 2020.
The Monument Hill/Kelly Airpark is the first location outside Alaska. Currently, the Alaska Weather Camera Program has a network of more than 200 cameras.

The Colorado Aeronautical Board approved $226,000 of funding from the Colorado Aviation Fund for a reimbursable agreement with the FAA Weather Camera Program office, state officials noted in a news release. Under this collaborative agreement, the FAA will install and configure weather cameras on each of Colorado’s Mountain AWOS units. The still images captured by each camera will be integrated into the FAA’s weather camera website: https://avcams.faa.gov/.

“We are very excited to have the first weather camera locations in the lower 48, and we’re looking forward to more opportunities to deploy them at airports once we get them installed on our mountain AWOS sites,” said David Ulane, Aeronautics Director for Colorado. “The FAA has noted that in partnership with airports and other entities, their ultimate goal is to have cameras at every official aviation weather station in the U.S. — we’re glad to be the first step towards that!”
All 13 weather cameras should be installed and operational by mid-August 2020.
