If your kids (or grandkids) are like mine, they’re done with online learning. As school winds down for the summer, my kids are looking forward to taking a break from Zoom and Google Classroom.
But then a Kansas State University email hit my inbox to announce its Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Virtual Academy. The course, slated for June 22-26, 2020, is geared for 14 to 17 year olds.
My son is 14 and when I showed him the program details he said, “that looks fun and pretty cool, plus it’s not like I have a ton of other things to do.”

Students will receive an instruction kit before the program begins. The kit includes, among other items, a logbook and K-State landing pad. Students who successfully complete the program will receive a special achievement package by mail.
The program will be based on the DJI Tello Quadcopter with Fly More kit, but other UAS can be used.
UAS Academy overview:
- Explore UAS flight fundamentals and maneuvers for multirotor aircraft
- Log three hours of flight time in an official logbook
- Learn about safety and flight planning
- Hear stories about careers from drone experts
- Discover your photography and video skills
The schedule include three to four hours a day of both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (self-paced) modules, according to university officials.
The course costs $49.
