Video: First flight… with his dog

By Ben Sclair · September 19, 2014 ·

Zach Sweetser’s friend Will took his dog, Huey (a Corgi) up for a first ride in Will’s Luscombe. Huey did OK.

Do you fly with your dog?

There are newer and better hearing protection for you family pets that fly. They can be found at 4 Paws Aviation. Check them out!

Cute video. My husband and I have a Cessna 340 and we fly with our three cats! Each one wears Mutt-Muffs, which they don’t mind wearing. Two stay in a large cat carrier and the other one stays in a soft carrier on the seat with a seat belt around it. The cats are not enthused about the take-off, but once we level off at cruising altitude, they nap the entire trip, which is about two hours. It sure beats driving nine hours with three cats!

I too, used to take my silver/white Persian flying with me in my C150. I didn’t put hime in a pet carrier, just on the seat next to me. He was good, he didn’t like it when I put him in the back one time, (there’s no seat in the back of a C150, and I think because he couldn’t see out. I didn’t do it very much, because I didn’t have those new mut muffs, (don’t think they had come out?) and I worried about the noise on his ears. But he was good as long as he sat next to me, but, if I had a student with me in the seat, and he had to go in the back, he didn’t like that.

Nice airplane. A friend used to take his dog named “Little Bit” with him all the time. He had a headset for him and a nice harness which was attached to the seat belt. “Little Bit” used to love flying, but recently my friend had a mild heart attack and sold his plane.

Nice video, where did you get those headphones for the dog? 🙂

Lovely airplane, pilot, scenery, and dog. Only one thing concerns me. When we drive or fly, we use seatbelts for ourselves and our human loved ones. Why is the dog loose in the cockpit, free to climb into his owner’s lap, distract, get in the way, and risk becoming a canine projectile through the windshield if that airplane should come to a sudden stop? Maybe next flight, Huey could wear a nice comfortable, sturdy harness, with the seatbelt threaded through the chest strap, loose enough so he can sit up or lie down, but snug enough that he won’t mess up the instrument panel if the two of them encounter turbulence.

I am the maker of the video. Try not to accuse before knowing the truth. The owner has Huey in a harness and his harness is buckled into the right lap belt. He is able to move freely left and right but he can’t move farther than just past the front of the seat. We made sure of this.
