Red Bull Air Race moves finale from China to Austria

By Ben Sclair · July 15, 2014 ·

The 2014 Red Bull Air Race World Championship season final will now be staged at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria, on October 25 and 26. The final race of the season has been moved to the F1 circuit in the Styrian mountains in place of the original race location in China due to feasibility.  This will serve as a homecoming of sorts, as the series started with its first-ever race in Zeltweg, Austria.

“I think it’s really great that the showdown for the 2014 season will be held in Austria,” said Pilot Hannes Arch. “That corner of the world loves the race. We already saw that in Rovinj in April how many fans the sport has. It would be a dream-come-true for me if I can hold on to win the championship in my home country.”  The Austrian is leading a tight battle for the world championship ahead of defending champion Paul Bonhomme of Britain with Pete McLeod of Canada and Nigel Lamb of Britain close behind.

The eight-stop 2014 Red Bull Air Race World Championship began in Abu Dhabi in March with subsequent stops in Rovinj, Croatia in April and Putrajaya, Malaysia in May. The remaining races will be held in Gdynia, Poland (July 26/27), Ascot, United Kingdom (August 16/17), Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, USA (September 6/7), and Las Vegas, Nevada, USA (October 11/12), before the final in Spielberg, Austria. The Spielberg stop will be the 58th overall Red Bull Air Race, a sport that has been staged in 18 countries since it was launched in 2003.

World Championship Standings: 1. Hannes Arch (AUT) 30 points, 2. Paul Bonhomme (GBR) 25, 3. Nigel Lamb (GBR) 17, 4. Pete McLeod (CAN) 17, 5. Matt Hall (AUS) 14, 6. Martin Sonka (CZE) 8, 7. Yoshihide Muroya (JPN) 7, 8. Nicolas Ivanoff (FRA) 5, 9. Matthias Dolderer (GER) 4, 10. Peter Besenyei (HUN) 2, 11. Kirby Chambliss (USA) 0, 12. Michael Goulian (USA) 0.
