Two aviation documentaries to air on PBS

By Janice Wood · January 31, 2012 ·

Northeast Ohio filmmaker Adam White will have two of his documentary films air on Western Reserve PBS this week: “Red Tail Reborn — Special Edition” and “The Restorers — They Were All Volunteers.”

“Red Tail Reborn — Special Edition” is the story of both the Tuskegee Airmen and of a group of airplane restorers who sacrifice to tell the tale of the Airmen. Red Tail Reborn was initially released on PBS in 2007, winning multiple Emmy Awards. Now a new version of the film is being released with an updated ending, finishing the decades-long journey of this story.

Each year the famous Doolittle Tokyo Raiders from World War II have a reunion to remember their mission, their comrades, and their heroic leader Gen. James Doolittle. In 2010, an extraordinary event took place. For the 68th Doolittle reunion, 17 B-25 bomber crews volunteered to gather in honor of the Raiders. Over 70,000 people turned up to witness the event, see the bombers and meet the Raiders.

“The Restorers — They Were All Volunteers” follows the journey of a Minnesota B-25 named “Miss Mitchell.” Join this restored bomber as she travels to Dayton, Ohio, to attend the largest B-25 gathering since World War II. If you missed the event, now you can experience this moment in time, honoring our heroes and remembering our history.

Both films will air on Western Reserve PBS (WEAO 49). “Red Tail Reborn — Special Edition” will air Friday, Feb. 3 at 10 p.m., while “The Restorers — They Were All Volunteers” will air Sunday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.

Additional screenings will be on Western Reserve PBS’s auxiliary channels. Click here for more information.

The films were produced by Cleveland-based Hemlock Films. The production crew was made up of mostly Northeast Ohio personnel, including Narrator James Kisicki, Producer Kara Martinelli, Composer Keith Nickoson, and Sound Recordist Kevin Hines.
