Watch commemorates National Gay Pilots anniversary

By General Aviation News Staff · February 12, 2020 ·

The Abingdon Co. has collaborated with the National Gay Pilots Organization (NGPA) to create a limited edition watch designed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of NGPA.

According to Abingdon officials, 50 pieces have been made and are individually serial numbered on the case back. The watch is priced at $399.

The custom timepiece made its debut at the NGPA’s annual Winter Warm-up event in Palm Springs, California, Feb. 7, 2020.

“We are excited to partner with The Abingdon Co. to launch an exclusive NGPA 30th anniversary watch to debut at our flagship event in Palm Springs,” said NGPA President David Pettet. “This creative design and affordable cost make this watch a unique and functional heirloom and a great way to benefit NGPA as 100% of the sale of each watch will benefit member programs and advocacy.”

The three time zone aviation watch is designed as a unisex style that can be worn on the right or left wrist due to the placement of the inner bezel crown at the center of the 40mm stainless steel case.

The letters “N, G, P, A” replace the first four numbers on a dark blue dial, and a 20mm leather strap is attached via The Abingdon Co.’s EZ Release pins.

Each watch also features a specialty custom case back and buckle with the NGPA logo.

Features include a sapphire crystal, C5 SuperLuminova coating for night visibility, and 100 Meter (330 ft.) water resistance. The watch comes in a white wooden box with the NGPA 30 Year Anniversary logo on the top and is wrapped around a blue felt pillow.

Given the ongoing concerns about GA’s future, particularly in encouraging, recruiting and developing new pilots, the better view might be to acknowledge that we may all have and express our beliefs, for religious, moral or other reasons, but no one otherwise interested in GA should ever feel discouraged, unwanted or unwelcome. Perhaps we can borrow from the You Can Play Project, which addresses this issue in professional, collegiate and scholastic sports: If You Can Fly, You Can Fly.

Another ploy to push an agenda that doesn’t have anything to do with driving an aircraft. Please stop crusading in every dimension of society. Glad to discuss truth with anyone that really desires to know it.

The big problem with the homosexual issue and individuals expressing their options on the subject stems from the simple fact that the media, and now General Aviation News, keeps bringing up the subject … constantly.
The Gay People are NOT “special” people. What most people are finding unacceptable is the position this group has taken … (ie) GAY PRIDE.
Let’s let it DIE …enough is enough.

I think its time we have a “straight pride” parade.

Many of these comments are proof that homophobia is still a problem in aviation. All the more reason for NGPA to continue doing what they do to support the LGBT community and protect them from attitudes like these. The hateful, hurtful, homophobic comments like the ones seen here, will only give the cause more strength. Thank you for keeping the conversation going, and thank you General Aviation News for supporting ALL aviators.

Not surprised by the replies. Lots of bigots and racists in aviation. Being an awful person *is* a choice, unlike being gay or black. Unfortunate so many choose that path.

I didn’t know there was such thing as straight pilots. Or at least admitted they were. Sorry I just don’t believe that way and certainly not something to celebrate.

If you believe there aren’t enough “Women” in aviation why do you think I should care about the .0001 percent of pilots who haven’t been able to figure out “What” they really are.
    Comm on! Get real.

Are you kidding me…. Does anyone care how I like my sex? I want a watch too based on my sexual preferences…unteal.

You obviously care, and it isn’t a preference you get to opt into or out of. Sorry if you’re triggered, but some people aren’t you.

I am hoping you’ll feature the straight pilots watch too when it’s developed?

How about the trans pilots watch?
