ChairFly, a new iPad app designed to help pilots practice instrument cross-checks without a simulator or an airplane, is now available on the Apple App Store.
ChairFly was created by Connor Van Siclen, a line service technician at Ramona Airport (KRNM) in California and a private pilot working toward his instrument rating. After passing his instrument knowledge test, he was eager to begin practicing, but the airplane he trains in was frequently booked and weather canceled many of the flights he did schedule.
“I’d just passed my IFR written and I wanted to keep the momentum going, but between a busy schedule on the airplane and weather cancellations, I was going weeks without practicing my scan,” Van Siclen said. “I needed something to help me keep my instrument cross-check alive, so I built it.”
ChairFly offers a traditional six-pack panel and a glass cockpit display, along with scenario practice for VOR holds and ILS approaches. A built-in guide walks students through the concepts as they practice.

The app was beta tested with CFIs and CFIIs before launch, he added.
ChairFly is available exclusively for iPad. The six-pack view is free, and the glass cockpit view is available for $6.99 per month with a three-day free trial.
