What reportedly happened: The pilot was a member of the California Highway Patrol and was flying as part of a traffic surveillance detail. About 40 minutes after the mission was to be finished, the pilot had not checked in.

General aviation accidents up

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released preliminary aviation accident statistics Friday, April 27, showing a slight overall increase in U.S. civil aviation accidents for 2011 from the previous year. All fatalities were in general aviation and on-demand Part 135 operations, such as charter, air taxi, air tour and air medical operations.

What reportedly happened: The student pilot was landing at his home airport at the end of a solo cross-country flight. When he contacted the air traffic control tower he was offered the option of runway 8, which had a tailwind, or 26, which had a crosswind.

Delayed go-around for Bonanza

What reportedly happened: The private pilot was attempting to land his single-engine airplane in a crosswind. The airplane drifted to the right of the runway and touched down. The left wing lifted and the pilot reacted by adding power for a go-around, but he then determined that a go-around was not a suitable option and reduced engine power.

What reportedly happened: According to several witnesses, the airplane’s engine sounded good during the takeoff roll, but at liftoff the wings were rocking and the airplane was not gaining altitude. The airplane banked hard left back toward the airport, and disappeared from view.
