What a gift it is to fly. To fly and write is an even greater gift. For those of us who find our home in the sky, we have been graced with fellow aviators who have taken the time to put pen to paper to deliver us, through words, back to our place of belonging.

Lycoming seeks approval on unleaded avgas

Lycoming Engines has applied for approval to use UL 91 unleaded avgas in several of its engine models, including those in the 233, 235, 320 and 360 engine families. Engines in the 540 family will follow as Lycoming completes additional validation, Lycoming officials said.

Tom Poberezny joins Citation Jet Pilots Owner-Pilot team

Tom Poberezny, chairman emeritus of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) has joined the leadership team of the Citation Jet Pilots Owner-Pilot Association (CJP), serving as vice president, CJP Events and Programs, and Chairman of the 2012 CJP Convention in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Sept. 12-16.

Lightspeed to reveal grant finalists at Sun ’n Fun

The Lightspeed Aviation Foundation will reveal the names of 20 charities — selected from hundreds of nominees — that will benefit from grants to be awarded this year. The announcement will be made at 11 a.m. March 28 at the Sun ’n Fun International Fly-In and Expo in Lakeland, Florida.

Aviat Husky fitted with shock-absorbing gear

Aviat Aircraft has received FAA approval for a new, shock-absorbing landing gear for the A-1C Husky. The gear will be standard equipment on all three versions of the Husky: those equipped with the 160, 180 and 200 hp engines. The 180 and 200 hp models have also been granted a 50-pound gross weight increase.

Lack of fuel, sun-glare contribute to fatal accident

This March 2010 accident report is provided by the National Transportation Safety Board. Published as an educational tool, it is intended to help pilots learn from the misfortunes of others.

Aircraft: Beech K35 Bonanza. Injuries: 1 Fatal. Location: Boulder City, Nev. Aircraft damage: Destroyed.

What reportedly happened: The 45-year-old private pilot, who had about 300 hours in the Bonanza, was on a cross-country flight to an airport that he had previously visited several times. He contacted airport personnel 15 miles short of his intended destination, stating that he was low on fuel and that he needed to land immediately.
