Berg Aerodrome slates open house

The Grass Strip Foundation at Berg Aerodrome (9GA2) in Midway, Georgia, will hold its third annual Open House Saturday, Oct. 27.

Owner Steve Berg invites all pilots and aviation enthusiasts to fly in their vintage airplanes or drive in their vintage cars to the open house and “enjoy telling the rest of us how great they are.”

Get home-itis kills two

This October 2010 accident report is provided by the National Transportation Safety Board. Published as an educational tool, it is intended to help pilots learn from the misfortunes of others.

Aircraft: Beech 36TC Injuries: 2 Fatal. Location: Rienzi, Miss. Aircraft damage: Destroyed

What reportedly happened: Prior to departure, the pilot contacted the flight service station controller to file an instrument flight rules flight plan. During the conversation, the briefer asked the pilot, “Do you require the latest adverse weather conditions?” The pilot replied, “No, that’s why we are getting out of here.”

Stearman wing becomes conference table

The Stearman is a classic of modern aviation, which inspired MotoArt to create a series of Stearman Wing Conference Tables. Each is custom sized in length up to 24 feet. Clients can determine final colors of the wooden spruce spars and base support legs. Finishing touches include tempered glass that is custom cut to maintain the shape of the wing.

Stand back, Jack

It goes without saying, of course, but every now and then it’s a good idea to stand down, relax, maybe even take a nap. No matter what you’re working on, or how important you perceive it to be, there is a point of diminishing returns if you push too hard. You’re only human after all. If you don’t periodically stand back, take a break, and revive yourself through a vacation, a cooling off period, or just a diversion to other things, your work will suffer.

Proficient Pilots Project debuts

The FARs require a pilot perform three takeoffs and landings within 90 days to maintain currency. Maintaining proficiency takes significantly more time, and often it is a lack of proficiency that leads to accidents and incidents.

During AirVenture 2012, flight instructors from the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) volunteered their time for the inaugural Pilot Proficiency Project. Conceived by SAFE in 2010, the demonstration project was a cooperative effort that involved Redbird Flight Simulations and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA).

Zenith celebrates 20th anniversary

Hundreds of people from all over the country and from as far away as Australia attended the Zenith Open Hangar Day and 20th Anniversary celebration held the weekend of Sept. 22 at the company’s headquarters in Mexico, Missouri. According to a post at EAA.org, picture-perfect weather helped draw upward of 400 attendees and more than 40 Zenith aircraft and others.
