AOPA unveils details on new flying club network

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) released details at last week’s AOPA Aviation Summit in Palm Springs, Calif., on a long-term initiative to facilitate the growth of flying clubs. West Virginia governor declares October ‘General Aviation Appreciation Month’

West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin has declared October “General Aviation Appreciation Month.”

The proclamation highlights general aviation’s pivotal role in supporting access to medical treatment, commerce and critical services throughout the state. The general aviation industry in West Virginia contributes $616 million to the economy annually.

Bahamas Pilot Challenge takes off

A new Bahamas Pilot Challenge has been launched for 2012-2013, drawing general aviation pilots to more of the many islands of the Bahamas starting just 50-60 miles off the Florida coast.

Pilots who document landings at 12 of the 20 Bahamas airports of entry before Nov. 30, 2013, will be eligible to win a total of 23 hotel nights at top resorts on various islands.

AOPA to create flying club network

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association will create a national network of flying clubs as part of a long-term initiative to facilitate flying club growth, association officials told attendees at the AOPA Aviation Summit Oct. 12. The network is part of AOPA’s efforts to grow the shrinking pilot population, according to a report at AOPA.org, noting that flying clubs offer affordability, community, quality instruction, an entry (or re-entry) point to aviation, and a viable business model. The flying club initiative, built on extensive research, also promotes flying clubs and helps new clubs get started, with a goal of increasing the number of clubs nationwide from 661 to 1,000 in five years.

Lockheed Martin Flight Services (LMFS) has launched the Automated Flight Service Station (AFSS) Pilot Web Portal with the new Adverse Condition Alerting Service (ACAS), designed to enhance safety and convenience for pilots who use LMFS to file flight plans.

Pilot Proficiency Project Scenarios now online

In cooperation with Redbird Flight Simulations, the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) recently made its Pilot Proficiency Project simulator training scenarios available for download through the SAFE website. The same simulator training scenarios co-developed by SAFE instructors and the Redbird team that were employed during this year’s EAA AirVenture and AOPA Aviation Summit are now available to all operators of Redbird simulators.
