CFIT kills two

Aircraft: Beech Duke. Injuries: 2 Fatal. Location: Edwards, Colo. Aircraft damage: Destroyed.

What reportedly happened: The pilot, 67, held a private pilot certificate with airplane single, multiengine, and instrument privileges. At the time of the accident he held a third class airman medical certificate and had in excess of 1,300 hours total time. The pilot-rated passenger, age 73, held a commercial pilot certificate with airplane single, multiengine, and instrument privileges. His total experience was not determined. The airplane was registered to and operated by the younger pilot.

Nation’s money woes put GA in hot seat

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Money is the name of the game as the President and Congress wrestle over what to do with the massive debt the nation has accumulated and to consider a budget for the coming year.

The Democratic-controlled Senate hasn’t passed a budget for three years. The Republican-controlled House has failed to convince the Senate to even discuss settling on a budget. While the battles continue over whether to tax more or cut expenses, general aviation has a number of issues to look out for in the President’s proposal for fiscal year 2013.

NextGen technology launched in western Colorado

DENVER – The FAA and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) have activated new NextGen technology that will help pilots address inclement weather around Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) in western Colorado.

The technology, known as Wide Area Multilateration (WAM), improves safety and efficiency by allowing air traffic controllers to track aircraft in mountainous areas that are outside radar coverage, FAA officials explain.

Oldest Fly-in Breakfast Club to land at GMU

On the morning of Sunday, Dec. 9, The South Carolina Breakfast Club will be landing at the Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU). They have been traveling to airports, in and right around South Carolina, since 1938, ceasing meetings only during World War II when there were restrictions on aviation fuel.

The club has no dues, no attendance requirements and no bylaws; they have just one rule “Safety First.” Breakfast is about $6 a plate and is ready at about 9 am. It’s that simple.
