Lessons learned during my iPad year

I received an iPad for Christmas last year and put it to use straightaway in my Skyhawk.

Not knowing which aviation application to use, I tried several. I purchased ForeFlight, Flight Guide and Pilot My-Cast by Garmin, and did a 30-day trial of WingX Pro from Hilton Software. Now, nearly a year on, I use ForeFlight most often, with My-Cast a close second.

With these apps I can plan a flight, review the weather anytime, fly the plan or change it on the move using an easily readable and seamless electronic sectional — and take advantage of the cheapest fuel stops enroute. [Read more...]

Garmin GTN receives EASA approval

Garmin International Inc. has received the European Aviation Safety Agency’s (EASA) validation of the U.S. Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the GTN 650 and GTN 750 series touchscreen avionics. These avionics are now certified and approved for installation in hundreds of makes and models of European-registered-general aviation aircraft.

Cessna gets FAA nod for G1000 SVT

Cessna Aircraft Co. has received FAA certification for Garmin’s Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT) for all G1000-equipped 172 Skyhawks, 182 Skylanes, 206 Stationairs and the Caravan product line.

The Garmin G1000 SVT gives the pilot a 3D graphical representation of the surrounding terrain and displays the aircraft’s position in an enhanced topographical database, according to company officials. Garmin’s SVT also includes other features such as 3D depiction of obstacle identification, traffic, flight path marker, zero pitch line, runway information and airport signs.

Cirrus chooses Garmin for jet

Cirrus Aircraft has selected Garmin as its avionics provider for production models of the Vision SF50 personal jet.The Vision flying test aircraft, V1, will have the Cirrus Perspective by GarminTM avionics system installed in early April — the same as is available on the SR-series of piston aircraft by Cirrus — and continue its flight test schedule.
