Avidyne autopilots certified for Matrix and Mirage

Avidyne Corp. has received Technical Standard Order (TSO) and Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval of the DFC90 autopilot for Entegra-equipped Piper PA-46 Matrix and Mirage aircraft, as well as TSO and STC approval of the DFC100 autopilot for Release 9 (R9)-equipped Piper PA-46 Matrix aircraft.

Connecting flights

The end of the year is a time of reflection. As 2011 winds down, my family and I experienced an unreal 19-day stretch that put a great deal into perspective about life and aviation.

Nov. 10: My wife, Deb, and I were in the Indianapolis International Airport when we received the news that her Dad’s cancer had spread too far to continue the battle and doctors recommended hospice.

Holiday gift-giving, Washington-style

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Reaching reliable sources of information here can often be confusing and frustrating. I sought to interview someone about the Christmas holidays and wanted to go directly to the source for gift giving.

Knowing the problems of getting correct answers in Washington, I started checking sources around the nation. Everyone I talked to directed me to the same place. When I finally made contact, I was right back here in Washington and introduced to Uncle Sam. His hand-outs to folks in this country and around the world cause many to think of him as Santa Claus.

A new pilot…and future aircraft owner

Mark Donovan, who wrote a story for us earlier this year about Flying Solo at Half a Century, sent us this message earlier this week: “I just wanted to let you know that I finally got my Private Pilot’s License on Nov. 13. It took a little bit longer than I had planned (7.5 months in total), but it was well worth the effort and wait. I’m now out flying every weekend, even in the winter wonderland of New Hampshire, and am investigating buying a plane (debating between a Cessna 172 and a Husky).” Congratulations Mark!

 

 

Barefoot Bandit gets more than seven years jail time

The 20-year-old “Barefoot Bandit” was sentenced Friday to more than seven years in prison after pleading guilty to dozens of charges, according to a Fox News report. Colton Harris-Moore gained international notoriety while evading police across America in stolen planes, boats and cars during a two-year crime spree. What captured the general aviation community’s interest is that it was said Harris-Moore taught himself to fly.

 

AeroTwin Engine to be produced in New Zealand

AeroTwin Motors reports that it has sold production assets and licensed improvements to establish AeroTwin sport aircraft engine production in New Zealand. Aeromotors Ltd., a New Zealand company, organized by former AeroTwin engine consultant and inventor W.L. White, plans to produce AeroTwin engines and develop new engines.
