Gearing up for Sun ’n Fun
Sun ’n Fun 2012 is about to begin. Billed as the “Spring Break for Pilots,” the central Florida airshow is revving up in numerous ways, thanks partly to the show’s new leader, John “Lites” Leenhouts (and yes, everyone really does call him “Lites,” his Navy pilot nickname). His team is refreshed and ready for a new event. The turmoil from last year’s tornado is behind them and many changes are planned.
Planes of Fame looking for volunteers
CHINO, Calif. – Organizers of the Planes of Fame Airshow (May 5-6) are looking for volunteers. Volunteer applications can be filled out online. More information from Cindy Novak at 909-597-3722.
For airshows and other aviation events, local is the way to go
If you hold off attending local aviation fly-ins, conferences and airshows so you can attend one of the “big ones,” like AirVenture or Sun ’n Fun, you are missing out. I’m back from the March 1-3 Montana Aviation Conference in Bozeman. This was the 28th conference and I can tell you it was wonderful.
TICO Warbird Show suffers iffy weather, but still shines
The weekend wasn’t kind to the TICO Warbird Airshow. Showery weather plagued Florida’s east coast. Some complained online that warbird flying was thinner this year and a promised act didn’t appear. But for the dyed-in-wool military aviation aficionado, this was still a pure play.
Any time of year, the Valiant Air Command (VAC) offers its wares at its Space Coast Regional Airport Museum in Titusville. It’s a destination for any enthusiast, with the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame and Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center nearby. But for one weekend each March, it’s World War II and Cold War aircraft on the taxiways and in the air.
Sun ‘n Fun warbirds judging suspended for 2012
A decline in recent years of participation in the warbird aircraft judging program at the Sun ‘n Fun International Fly-In & Expo in Lakeland, Florida, has prompted officials to suspend the program in 2012. According to officials from the Warbirds of America, they and Sun ‘n Fun officials will reevaluate the program during the one-year stand-down. WOA is seeking the input of the warbird community on the topic. You can add your input via e-mail at warbirds@eaa.org.
Banyan to host Customer Appreciation Day
Fort Lauderdale, FLA. – Banyan Pilot Shop located at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport will host its sixth annual customer appreciation day, Saturday, April 7, from 11 am – 2 pm rain or shine. There will be hot dogs, hamburgers, prize drawings, kid’s activities, special sales, product demonstrations and aircraft on display.
‘FIFI’ kicks off month-long Florida tour
The Commemorative Air Force’s star attraction, the B-29 “FIFI,” landed late in Daytona Beach March 1 because she flies “VFR only” these days. But she immediately swelled the hearts of World War II vets and awed general aviation flyers here more than a decade after her last Florida appearance. And there’s more to come.
Sun ’n Fun visitors are in for a treat March 27-31. So are the aviation-minded in Titusville March 7-11 at the TICO warbird show, Ft. Lauderdale March 14-18, Punta Gorda March 18-25 at the Florida International Airshow, and in Tallahassee April 3-5.
Sun ’n Fun to feature Splash-In again this year
The Sun ’n Fun Splash-In will once again be held at Fantasy of Flight on Lake Agnes in Polk City, Florida.
The Splash-In, an event dedicated to seaplanes and float flying, is held every year as part of the fly-in. A few years ago, Fantasy of Flight owner Kermit Weeks invited the seaplanes to his facility and it has been there ever since. This year’s Splash-In will be held Thursday, March 29.
