Whew! It’s over. Sun ’n Fun can be the busiest six days of one’s life — until the next one. I wanted to skim the very top of what I found interesting at the recently concluded show. Today I’ll cover airframe manufacturers and follow up this week with more.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association named three winners for $5,000 flight training scholarships at this year’s Sun ‘n Fun International Fly-In & Expo.
F-22 to headline Rocky Mountain Airshow

The Rocky Mountain Airshow in Broomfield, Colo., has been selected as one of 20 events worldwide to host the U.S. Air Force’s F-22 Raptor Demo Team.

A U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor will fly at the August 24-26 Rocky Mountain Airshow in Broomfield, Colorado. F-22 demo teams will make just 20 appearances worldwide in 2012. The 10th annual air show will include aircraft ranging from WWI replicas to state of the art technology. Fireworks follow a Hot Air Balloon Glow and the twilight air show on Friday night. The AdventureZone kid’s area will showcase numerous activities and hands on projects to engage and excite kids of all ages while emphasizing the importance of STEM curricula. Hundreds of aircraft from across the country will also be on site for the 32nd annual Rocky Mountain Regional Fly-in held in conjunction with the air show.
Speakers unveiled for Trade Show Aviation Idaho

The second annual Trade Show Aviation Idaho, being held May 18-19, in conjunction with the Idaho Aviation Association’s Annual Meeting, has announced its guest speakers and workshops.
Addison Pemberton, aircraft restorer and aviation historian, will be the headlining guest speaker on Saturday night, and will have his Boeing 40C, the oldest flying Boeing aircraft in the world, on display in the show hangar.
Performers donated $250K, how much did you ‘donate’?

At a closing day media briefing, Sun ’n Fun president John ‘Lites’ Leenhouts said airshow performers donated $250,000 worth of performances to the fly-in this year. Lites was a few minutes late to the media briefing because he was thanking performers at the airshow safety briefing. “When a group donates $250,000 of services,” Lites said, “I think it is important to say thank you.”
Batton named president Virginia Aviation Council

Richmond, VA – The Virginia Aviation Council elected Ray Batton as their next President at their March 17 meeting. Batton flies a Turbo 182, is active in the EAA Young Eagles program and is President of a Fortune 500 company. He also seeks to open the world of aviation to adults who’ve thought about flight as an unattainable goal. “I have taken a large number of business people for rides,” says Batton. “They often think flying is too difficult or scary until you get them in the plane.”

Flying high after the tornado

Last March 31, Mike Stewart, founder and flight lead of Team RV, and Tad Sarent, flight lead, were in the airshow briefing at Sun ’n Fun, eagerly anticipating the team’s debut at the nation’s second largest airshow.
“This was a big deal for us,” Stewart recalled. But as the briefing got underway, he got a text: One of the team’s planes was upside down, destroyed by the F1 tornado that roared through the grounds.
