First Steam Plant Fly-In a success

The Sumner County Regional Airport, in Gallatin, Tennessee, hosted the first-ever Tennessee Steam Plant Fly-In Saturday, June 23. Organized by EAA Chapter 1343 and GTO Aviation, Inc., the inaugural fly-in featured vendors, information sessions, flight simulators, food, music, and more than 200 airplanes. Aviators from across the southeast and as far as Las Vegas  flew in to help kick off what EAA Chapter 1343 Vice President Len Assante hopes will be an annual success.

Red Tails Ford Mustang ready for auction

Every year, Ford Motor Co. designs a one-of-a-kind Mustang to auction at EAA AirVenture. For 2012, Ford has created a “Red Tails Edition” Mustang to honor the famous Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American aviators in the United States Army Air Corps. This special Mustang will be auctioned off on Thursday, July 26, to benefit the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Young Eagles Program.

Mr. Murphy and his laws

I didn’t make the Lady Taildragger Fly-In held in Savannah, Tenn., the first weekend in June, and from the comments on the website and the texts from my friend and fellow pilot, Sharon Tinkler, it was a roaring success. Kudos to founder and organizer of Ladies Love Taildraggers, Judy Birchler, and Savannah-Hardin airport manager Montille Warren for their hard work.

“Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” In my case, Murphy’s Law should be modified to “Many events that you want or should attend will be scheduled the same weekend as far apart as possible in order to cause as much stress as possible.” [Read more...]

Country star Phil Vassar to perform at Oshkosh

Award-winning country music star and songwriter Phil Vassar joins the marquee musical lineup slated for EAA AirVenture 2012 as the grand finale of a day-long salute to veterans on Friday, July 27. The 60th annual edition of “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration” will be held July 23-29 at Wittman Regional Airport (OSH) in Oshkosh.

Flabob Airport launches Flying Circus

In a program designed to bring the origins of flight into modern day, Flabob Airport (RIR) in Riverside, Calif., will become the site for an Aerial Cavalcade Sept. 29. On that date, people will have the rare opportunity to see a Wright Flyer replica make a flight straight down the runway. A French Bleriot is also expected to fly. These two pioneer aircraft will be followed by flying machines from the 1920s, 1930s and ’40s. [Read more...]
