Next step for Pilot’s Bill of Rights

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Pilot’s Bill of Rights is moving along through Congress after Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) recently introduced a companion bill to one introduced last year in the Senate by Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), which now has more than 60 co-sponsors.

The two bills are meant to improve the relationship between general aviation pilots, the FAA, and the National Transportation Safety Board.

International workshop on electric aircraft standardization slated

ASTM International Committee F37 on Light Sport Aircraft will host the International Workshop on Electric Aircraft Standardization March 28 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lakeland, Fla. The workshop is being held in conjunction with Committee F37’s standards development meetings at the 38th Annual Sun ’n Fun International Fly-In and Expo.

Residential Through The Fence protection in FAA bill

After three and a half years of hard work by many Residential Through The Fence (rTTF) advocates, H.R. 658, the FAA Air Transportation Modernization and Safety Improvement Act containing language preserving rTTF, has passed the House and Senate and sent to President Obama for his expected signature.

Congress passes four-year FAA bill

After 23 short-term extensions, both chambers of Congress passed the four-year funding bill for the FAA. It now goes to the President, who is expected to sign it. This gives the FAA long-term planning after more than four years of delays.

GPS testing slated for Wilmington, N.C.

The FAA is conducting GPS testing, Feb. 3-10, in the Wilmington, N.C., area. This testing may result in “unreliable or unavailable” GPS signal, FAA officials said.

Controllers honored

Two Chicago Center controllers guided the pilot of a general aviation plane with icing conditions, a lost localizer and low fuel to a safe landing. A team of three Seattle Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) controllers directed the pilot of a plane that had run out of fuel at 3,200 feet to the nearest airport. A Denver Center controller saved the life of a pilot and his wife by instructing the pilot’s wife to an emergency landing route after the pilot became incapacitated from lack of oxygen during the plane’s ascent.

These three remarkable flights assists, and seven others from around the country were honored at the National Air Traffic Controllers Association’s (NATCA) eighth annual Archie League Medal of Safety Awards banquet, part of NATCA’s annual safety conference.

Senate and House committees approve FAA funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Leaders in the Senate and House Tuesday reached agreement on long-term FAA legislation providing a four-year funding authorization, ending a series of 23 short-term extensions.

Cecil Airport receives safety award

Florida’s Cecil Airport (VQQ) has been awarded the FAA Southern Region’s 2011 General Aviation Airport Safety Award for its efforts in safety. This award was based on the development and implementation of specific airport safety programs, and other accomplishments, that resulted in improved safety, according to officials.
