First solo, first incident

This February 2010 accident report is provided by the National Transportation Safety Board. Published as an educational tool, it is intended to help pilots learn from the misfortunes of others.
Aircraft: Flight Design CTLS. Injuries: None. Location: Fort Myers, Fla. Aircraft damage: Substantial.
What reportedly happened: Once cleared for his first solo by his CFI, the student pilot listened to the ATIS, which indicated the wind was from 320° at 10 knots. He taxied to runway 31. He began the takeoff roll and felt that the airplane was being pushed from the left.

Associations ‘unwavering’ in bid for driver’s license medical

Officials at the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) say they are “unwavering in their effort to open more aircraft to pilots using a driver’s license and medical self-assessment,” despite the FAA’s recent denial of a request to expand the driver’s license medical to private pilots flying aircraft 6,000 pounds or less. On Feb. 2, the FAA denied a 2009 petition by David Wartofsky, owner of Potomac Airfield in Maryland, that had received more than 1,000 supportive comments, including comments from AOPA. FAA proposes to raise pilot qualification standards

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The FAA has proposed to substantially raise the qualification requirements for first officers who fly for U.S. passenger and cargo airlines. The proposed rule would require first officers to hold an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, requiring 1,500 hours of flight time.
Stallion 51 celebrates 25th anniversary

Stallion 51 will kick off a yearlong “Silver Jubilee” commemoration at this year’s Sun ’n Fun International Fly-in and Expo in Lakeland, Fla., March 27-April 1. Sun ’n Fun will dedicate Friday, March 30, to Stallion 51 in commemoration of its 25 years. Lee Lauderback, Stallion 51′s president and chief pilot, will perform his signature solo Mustang routine at the beginning of the night air show that will culminate Sun ’n Fun’s “Stallion 51 Day.”
