Sign up for a spot on the Virginia Fly-in Parade of Flight

After 14 successful years, the Virginia Aviation Council is adding a crowd-pleasing flying event to its popular Virginia Regional Festival of Flight. Surveys have shown that attendees want to see more aircraft in flight, so this year a Directed Parade of Flight will take place on Saturday, April 28, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Suffolk Executive Airport (SFQ). The airport will be closed by NOTAM to all arriving and departing traffic during this aerial showcase.

Sun ‘n Fun warbirds judging suspended for 2012

A decline in recent years of participation in the warbird aircraft judging program at the Sun ‘n Fun International Fly-In & Expo in Lakeland, Florida, has prompted officials to suspend the program in 2012. According to officials from the Warbirds of America, they and Sun ‘n Fun officials will reevaluate the program during the one-year stand-down. WOA is seeking the input of the warbird community on the topic. You can add your input via e-mail at warbirds@eaa.org.

Handle confusion for twin Piper pilot

This March 2010 accident report is provided by the National Transportation Safety Board. Published as an educational tool, it is intended to help pilots learn from the misfortunes of others.

Aircraft: Piper Twin Comanche. Injuries: None. Location: Baltimore, Maryland. Aircraft damage: Substantial.

What reportedly happened: The pilot said he had 26 hours of flight time in the accident airplane, but that it was two years before the accident and he had not flown the airplane since.

The magic of mentors

Step back in time and think back to when you were the one looking over the airport fence. The whole world on the other side of the fence seemed so intimidating, yet so inviting. You might remember the feelings of excited anticipation on your way to the airport, and then the apprehensive shyness that set in as soon as you were there.

Luckily, I always stumbled into someone who was gracious enough to give me a few minutes of their time and answer my questions. I found that one question answered led to more questions asked and a true thirst for knowledge was born. The questions turned into conversations, acquaintances developed into friendships, and several of those friends have become mentors to me.
