Cessna Aircraft officials reported on opening day of SUN ’n FUN that the Cessna 172 Skyhawk, 182 Skylane, and 206 Stationair year 2012 models will now come equipped with the Garmin GTS 800 Traffic Alert System (TAS).

This system, when integrated into the avionics package, can detect traffic in the vicinity, audibly alert the pilot of the traffic’s location and distance, and make the aircraft more visible to other pilots in the area, officials said.

Brian Lindquist joins Dallas Airmotive

Brian Lindquist has joined Dallas Airmotive, a BBA Aviation Engine Repair and Overhaul (ERO) company, as Regional Engine Manager for the Northwestern United States. Lindquist will be responsible for selling repair and overhaul services on Honeywell TFE731 engines and 36 series APU, and on Pratt & Whitney Canada PW305 engines.

High grades, high flight for student

How do you manage a 4.4 GPA on a 4.0 scale? “You take lots of Advanced Placement and Honors classes,” said Joshua Gutierrez, a 17-year-old honor student at Central Florida Aviation Academy, which is on the SUN ’n FUN campus.

Gutierrez has the highest GPA in his school and as a reward he earned a ride in the back seat of a T-6 Monday morning.

Their unique sound marked a generation…

So says the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation. I don’t know much about helicopters — most general aviation pilots don’t. But these guys are grabbing attention and filling seats at airshows. And I had hardly heard of them before.

Sun ‘n Fun kicks off tomorrow

The 38th annual Sun ’n Fun Fly-In kicks off Tuesday, March 27, at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport (LAL) in Florida.

A full day of activities is planned, from forums to the airshow to the evening program featuring the Parris Island Marine Band, who are playing as part of the fly-in’s celebration of 100 years of Marine aviation.

Vertical Power has debuted the VP-400 system, a back-up EFIS that flies the aircraft safely to the best runway in an emergency, according to officials.

Inaugural Eagle Flights to take off at Oshkosh

Calhoun Air Center at Calhoun County Airport in Texas has received the 2012 WOAW Certified Women Friendly Flight Training Facility seal by Women of Aviation Worldwide (WOAW). This is the second year the flight school has been awarded the seal.
