WingX Pro7 upgraded

Hilton Software has introduced a Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) with Look Ahead Protection to WingX Pro7 for iPad and iPhone. WingX Pro7’s new GPWS warning system alerts pilots to an impending or immediate danger of impacting terrain or an obstacle, company officials said.

WingX Pro7 Version 6.8 also adds new FlightShare technology enabling pilots to share flight information between devices, two-pilot crews, and between a student and a flight instructor.

Takeoff into trees

This September 2010 accident report is provided by the National Transportation Safety Board. Published as an educational tool, it is intended to help pilots learn from the misfortunes of others.

Aircraft: Globe Swift. Injuries: 1 Serious, 1 Minor. Location: Clyo, Ga. Aircraft damage: Substantial.

What reportedly happened: The pilot and pilot-rated passenger were departing from a grass runway in a tailwheel-equipped airplane. According to the pilot, the engine lost power after takeoff.

The lunch summit

Believe it or not, I am not universally loved and admired. None of us are, really, so I’m sure you’re not exactly bowled over by this admission. But once you step into the political arena, you more or less guarantee that you’re going to become a target to at least a few folks. Know that up front, but get involved anyway. The industry needs you.

This tendency to turn on anyone who is attempting to do something beneficial is no surprise. Even in the good ol’ days, politicians were reviled more than they were revered. W.C. Fields, the juggler who became an early comic film star said, “Hell, I never vote for anybody, I always vote against.” Not much has changed.

Strong opposition to user fees repeated

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Obama’s proposal to impose a $100 per-flight user fee (which as currently proposed on Page 31 here exempts, “All piston aircraft, military aircraft, public aircraft, air ambulances, aircraft operating outside of controlled airspace, and Canada-to-Canada flights.”) got a going over Wednesday, Sept.12, in the Small Business Committee of the House of Representatives with strong opposition to it, but with indications that some witnesses and members of the legislature would continue to press for the charge. Just one witness attempted to justify the charge by maintaining that a fee-for-use is the fairest method of raising revenue.

Primary support for the fee came from University Professor Kenneth J. Button, PhD, who insisted that the only fair means of allocating costs for any product or service is a direct fee. He said, “the current system is wrong and fees more attuned to costs would provide signals to users of the economic implications of their flights.” [Read more...]

Flightline TV show nominated for Emmy

The Flightline TV show has been nominated for a regional Emmy Award for programming excellence during Season #2. In the category of Historic/Cultural/Nostalgic programming, The Flightline is one of three finalists. The awards will be given out Sept. 29 in Minneapolis.
