A couple hundred kids and a few adults had the opportunity to build a wing rib at EAA’s KidVenture, thanks to Wicks Aircraft Supply and a number of dedicated volunteers. Wicks provided the capstrip material and plywood to the program.

“Some kids have been back to KidVenture five or six times over the years with the idea of adding a new rib each year they come to Oshkosh,” said Roger Standard, coordinator for Build-A-Rib. In some cases, according to Roger, the dads sit down beside their sons or daughters to build their own ribs.

Seven members of the dedicated Aviators group from Wathen Aviation High School, made it to Oshkosh for the 2009 AirVenture. The group’s one-word summary for a week’s immersion in AirVenture: “great”.

The group was assisted by EAA Chapter 252, which offered campground space and sleeping bags to the boys, while EAA Chapter 444, provided accommodations for the two girls. By volunteering, each student was provided with two meals a day. They joined their hometown EAA Chapter One for one dinner and were guests at the Young Eagles dinner on another night. Their enthusiasm for the experiences they encountered was unmistakable and they all kept themselves busy from sunrise to long after dark.

Good Press: Hickory homebuilder makes local paper

Eighty-eight year old Paul Wise made the Hickory (N.C.) Daily Record for building an RV-12 in his garage. The story is fairly accurate, which is good for local media. There is also a comment from a local noting that his 15-year-old son just returned from AirVenture and might be interested in helping Mr. Wise.

  • O-540-A4D5 (6-cylinder) will use the S-1-26; and
  • IO-540-D4A5 will need the S-1-32.

Most models are available for immediate delivery and are priced at $1,200.

OSH: GAMA brings business operators to AirVenture

On AeroShell Square on Friday afternoon (July 31), the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) hosted a press conference to tell business aviation’s story. Instead of GAMA president Pete Bunce defending the business use of aircraft, he invited several business operators to share their stories first hand.

Of the six operators to take the stage, Shye Gilad, president and CEO of ProJet Aviation was, in my opinion, the most eloquent and most forceful of the lot. I asked Shye to send his speech so I could share it with all of you. It is pasted in below. Please consider forwarding this to your local media outlets and your elected members of Congress.

The American government has spent a lot of time and money trying to stimulate the economy and create jobs. In fact, as American taxpayers we have spent more than a trillion dollars to try to save our economy, with a goal of creating 3.5 million jobs over the next two years.

So you have to wonder – what was Representative [Gary] Ackerman (N.Y.) thinking when he chastised auto executives for flying the company’s private jet to Washington? Why did Brad Sherman, a Representative from California – a state that will need to borrow 8-10 billion dollars to get through this year alone, feel compelled to join him? The truly delicious irony here is that these two congressmen thought nothing of demonizing an industry that generates over 1.2 million high-paying American jobs, when in fact their irresponsible actions led to immediate job losses at the very companies they were supposedly trying to save.

VirtualHUD projects on prop arc

VirtualHUD aims to improve situational awareness without the need to take your eyes off the sky. Though it appears that the images are projecting onto the windscreen, VirtualHUD projects flight data onto a virtual surface created by your spinning propeller. Now instead of looking at a display inside the cockpit, you fly with your eyes outside the plane.
